This time of year is boom time for online retailers as Christmas shopping starts in earnest and more and more people decide to do their purchasing online. And, I think the boom could be bigger than expected this year thanks to the snow.
We’ve already had one so-called Cyber Monday, during which Visa Europe expected to see spending of £265 million on its cards, while Play.com and eBay believe 6 December will be another record day of spending.
Play.com is expecting 1,200 orders to be placed per minute, while eBay is preparing itself for 5.4 million shoppers to log in on 5 and 6 December and buy 16 gifts every second. That’s a lot of money being spent through just a few clicks of the mouse.
David Smith, managing director at the Interactive Media in Retail Group, says in The Guardian that we will spend £6.4 billion in December on Christmas shopping and that nearly 10% of this spending will occur on Super Sunday (5 December) and Mega Monday (6 December).
And in fact, thanks to the snow and ice and the usual collapse of our transport system, we’re likely to witness a few more mega online spending days which could very well trouble the record books. Get ready for some Tremendous Thursdays and Fantastic Fridays.
So, if your business website has ecommerce functionality then I think it could be a good few weeks as the inclement weather keeps shoppers away from high streets, out of shops and glued to their computers.
