Mobile internet boom a golden opportunity for businesses

More about mobile internet use this week. Having read about the launch of Google Wallet the other week and seen the new Barclaycard mobile payment system ad recently, my mind’s been somewhat focused on the subject and what it means for businesses and mobile advertising.

What is clear is that mobile internet use is being adopted at an incredible rate, much faster than that in the past for desktop
internet access. According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, the UK mobile advertising market was worth £83 million in 2010, up by 113% over 2000. Morgan Stanley estimates that by 2020, there will be 10 billion mobile internet devices worldwide – 10 times the number of PCs currently in use.

All these figures mean a lot of opportunities for businesses. The big boys are leading the way and medium and small businesses won’t be far behind, or shouldn’t be. As ever, technology is helping drive the growth in mobile internet use. Location-based services, which use the GPS functionality of a mobile device to offer users services based on their location, such as Google
Places
and Facebook Places, are transforming the market, both for consumers and businesses.

Speech recognition is also driving growth in mobile search traffic. I read in a recent Google blog that the company is developing its Voice Search software that makes searching on the go – for hotels, restaurants, dry cleaners, etc., much easier. As the blog says: “just speak your query and the answer is on its way”.

As I’ve said before, it’s crucial that businesses put themselves in a position to benefit from the huge growth in mobile search traffic, which means mobile advertising and mobile website optimisation. A web design has to be compatible with all mobile devices and being at the top of the search engine rankings has never been so important, which makes SEO and SMO vital services.
