Want to rank in the search results? Get on with social media

09 Feb 2010

So many people come to Chichester Design wanting us to get their websites on the first page of Google…

In some cases this is possible and will just take a bit of careful bit of attention from our Search Engine Optimisation expert, in other cases this process will be a longer process and may involve a complete overhaul of the website content.

There are also some who are just unwilling to take our advice as gospel when we talk about the benefits of Search Engine Optimisation. You are very wise because we are not omnipotent (if not fairly close to it) and there are many unscrupulous companies out there who are ready to take your money for a load of old rope in return. However, when you come to Chichester Design asking for our advice then you could do worse than to listen to what we have to say.

Take social media, for example. We advise as part of a mixed marketing strategy that most of our customers employ the benefits of social media. We advise them to build their brand through Twitter, create social communities through Facebook and make and stay in touch with business contacts through LinkedIn. But many are still a little frightened of the consequences or confused about the benefits:

People who are interested in my product/service don’t use social media?

What if someone says something bad about my brand?

How is social media really going to help me?

And blithely, I would have to answer:

Did you know that 67% of those online use social media, there are more than 580 million social media users worldwide and that the majority of those using Facebook on a regular basis are aged 30-50 years?

Did you know that social media acts as a digital word of mouth and that people will talk about your brand whether you like it or not and wherever they like? Wouldn’t you rather have a right to reply and clear up any issues online, in real time?

Did you know that Google is now integrating real-time data from social media platforms in its search results so that social media will help you get higher up the search rankings?

Yes, that’s right, Google is including real-time data from more than one billion web pages, including status updates from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and blogs, in search results. So, if you write a status update referring to a brand name then there is a distinct possibility that it will show up in the search results when someone searches for that brand name via Google.

The fact of the matter is that if you’re not using social media to promote your brand, product or service then you’re playing a dangerous game. You’re risking not only losing valuable traffic referred from those social media sites, by way of a url link to a recent blog post or new product page, but you are also losing out on the traffic generated by organic search results. If you want to rank well in the search results, then you simply have to get on with social media.
